Bug#284996: Some follow-up to #284996

Some follow up;  Suspecting the problem might be caused by the drive, and since the hard drive is easily changed on this laptop model, I removed the 8GB drive and replaced it with a Toshiba MToshiba MK2101MAN 2.1GB 2.1GB. The same symptoms persist with the MK2101MAN. The laptop was booted using a Sarge RC2 CD-R, and the install progressed as far as the partitioner. The partitioner was able to read the existing partition table (a single Win98 partition) which was subsequently "trashed" (data files were backed up first). cfdisk and fdisk launched from the 2nd console window were able to "see" /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/disc (typing this path from memory. What's lun0 anyway?), but they didn't successfully write the partition table either.

Could this be an IDE module compatibility issue? How can I zero in closer on the cause?
