Bug#345276: debian-installer: stage 2 gets delayed due to the installer hammering some ftp servers
Looked into this a little closer. The problem is in apt-setup, but it only appears during the first instance of apt-setup, and only for ftp.debian.org (note that
ftp.debian.org gets resolved to debian-mirror.cs.umn.edu, and the problem happens as well if this is entered manually into apt-setup). I tried a couple of the other mirrors, which worked fine. Subsequent issuing of apt-setup seem to work without issue (even after clearing out /var/lib/apt/lists). It's just the first time at first boot and only
ftp.debian.org.
i can confirm that sarge d-i 3.1r1 has this issue as well.

You're right again Joey. The behavior in sarge d-i is the same. One apt-get test per source. I was mistaken...perhaps i was subconsciously rationalizing that something must have been different between sarge and etch.
my network is fairly standard. i have two computers behind an of-the-shelf router. i looked at the router firewall log. it is not blocking packets from/to ftp.debian.org or its ip address. i am not running anything network-intensive (certainly not a bunch of connections to
ftp.debian.org).
