I'm guessing that I need a boot.img.gz with a 2.6.12 kernel to match what's
in the ISO, but I don't know which date that corresponds to. Or else you left
something more out of the ISO image.

I'm using this latest version in order to get the AHCI driver. The target
devices are SATA drives. There is no floppy or CD on the target system.

You are mixing a daily hd-media image (built from unstable and using
kernel 2.6.14) with a netinst CD image from stable. This won't work
because, as you say, the kernel versions don't match.

If you need a newer kernel than 2.6.8, you need to either use both images
for the Etch Beta1 release (2.6.12), or the daily images (2.6.14).
Note that this means you will be installing testing instead of stable.

Closing this report as the cause is unsupported mixing of images.

Cheers,
FJP
