Do you however get a "login: " prompt at some moment?

All this is probably because of a X-Window setup that's not working
out of the box.

Setting up X-Window is rather out of the scope of the Debian Installe
rteam, though I understand that, from the user point of view, all this
pertains to the "system installation".

You might get appropriate help on the debian-user mailing list. You
will probably need to first look at the /var/log/XFree86.0.log file
first (I hope I remind the right name) to see which errors may show up
there.

You mentioned that you "ordered the CD from Debian". But Debian does
not ship CD's....so mor einformation about the CD you're using would
be nice. You can get some by typing F1 when the CD boots up.
