I am thinking about adding some hard disk drives. Will Debian recognize an
external hard drive do you have any suggestions about which ones I should
use for an HP d4100e

I don't know then.  I guess you can't use it until it gets support in
linux then.

Perhaps asking the libata developers if it is a card they know about and
are working on would give you a clue.
