Could you follow up with the lpsci output that you left out of the
report (you only included lspci -n output, which is only half of the
picture).

If you were using raid, it might be due to the kernel building the
raid array in the background. This is supposed to only use otherwise
unused disk IO but it has been known to sometimes cause problems,
especailly when combined with certian filesystems and/or LVM, and
could explain the kernel version dependent nature of the problem.

More details about your raid setup and what filesystems you chose 
would be useful.
