I've also tried the new version with / on XFS and it still hangs then. The hang occurs when running the command grub-install --recheck --no-floppy "(hd0)" If I exit from grub-installer just before that command is run, and run it manually from a chroot, it hangs also the first time it is run, but succeeds when it is run a second time. An strace for both first and second run are attached.
