Self-followup to inform you that I added a couple memory modules to
the machine and retried.
Now the machine has a memory capacity equal to 48 Mibyte (that's twice
the capacity debian-installer claims will suffice...) and the
installation completed successfully (at last!).
I repeat, it's sarge debian-installer (as released last june, 3.1 r0):
how can it require so much memory to run? :-(
