Well, i think you are confunding lot of stuff here.
ext2 was used for 2.4 kernels, while cramfs was used for 2.6 kernels, upto the
2.6.12 currently used for d-i.
the 2.6.14 and beyond kernels do not support devfs anymore, which cause
problems with initrd-tools, and thus either initramfs-tools or yaird are the
prefered tools to generate the ramdisk, and both of the switched from using
the initrd infrastructure with a cramfs or ext2 filesystem, to using the
initramfs infrastructure and filesystem ( a bit confunding that initramfs is
used for three different things here :). And furthermore, initrd-tools was an
unmaintainable mess that we are well ride of, so no regret in loosing it.
Now, what is the reason behind your question ?
