Package: base-config
Version: 1.33.18

Debian Woody R1 installation from CD-images fails during configuration
of core packages. The GUI installer tells me that the installation
failed, and offers five tries to try the failed part again (which
fail). However, the installer does not tell me which part specifically
failed. Switching consoles to the install script screen, I see the
following error message at the bottom:

(none) user.err dbootstrap[61]: Failure while configuring base packages.

Issuing the debootstrap command by hand does not solve the situation
altough the command does not report any errors then.

This is what I did prior to the bug appearing (I left out unrelated
installation stages):

1. Repartitioned my hard drive by moving root, /var, /usr and some other
partitions into a big root partition. What was left intact from
previous install were /home and /boot.
2. Initialized root partition.
3. Mounted boot partition.
4. Started installing base system.

After trying the install a couple of times, and talking with my friends
about the failure, I ended up initializing the boot partition too in my
frustration. Initializing the boot partition enabled the installation
to proceed past configuring base packages. However, this was not my
desired course of action because I lost my previous kernel
configuration which I hadn't backed up (that's why I was trying to
mount the /boot partition in the first place).

The installation system should overwrite files in /boot partition rather
than failing silently wihtout any indication on what kind of trouble it
is seeing.

The bug did not go away when I gave the debootstrap command by hand. The
command was shown on a previous line, but I did not write it down. The
command did not accept --boot-floppies parameter from console, however.
All other parameters were accepted (arch, instmnt and target), and the
command finished without an error message.

The installation CD's were created with jigdo last week, and they have a
timestamp of 2002-12-18. The sources.list line for the first CD is:

deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 3.0 r1 _Woody_ - Official i386 Binary-1
(20021218)]/ unstable contrib main non-US/contrib non-US/main

The sources given to jigdo were my companys Debian mirror and
non-us.debian.org (or whatever the default is) for non-US packages. The
company Debian mirror is up-to-date.

I suggest the bug is fixed by:

	1) Allowing debootstrap to overwrite files in /boot. The files are
stock kernel files anyways, so there is little chance the user
	   will lose custom files.
	2) Report more verbose error messages when the installation
process fails. The only hint about this kind of an error message
found on the net suggested I have some sort of faulty hardware
	   (I don't).

My old boot partition contained woody installation kernel from the time
when woody was not stable. Additionally it had some kernel images I had
compiled myself with and without make-kpkg. There were no other files
save the ones added by kernel installation (both deb and make all).

The installation kernel version was probably 2.2.20 (2.2.20-idepci).
Kernel-image-2.2.20-idepci package seems to provide it. It is the
default kernel image used; I hitted enter on the Debian installation
boot menu. The kernel image is no longer the current, but 2.2.20-idepci
image file was left to /boot partition so I'd wager it was the
installation kernel. My ISDN connection does not work with that kernel
so I had to upgrade as soon as possible to get the system working.

I'm closing all bug reports filed on the boot-floppies since this
codebase has reached its end of life. boot-floppies is only in Debian
oldstable now (and temporarily in unstable because of bug #224469).

The new installer for sarge and beyond is of course, the
debian-installer. It solves a great many issues present in the
boot-floppies.

If you believe that your boot-floppies bug is still present in
debian-installer somehow, then please reopen the bug report and reassign
it there, or perhaps better, file a new bug report.
