As you see, kernel-image-2.6.8-2-686 IS listed (because I added it to the
CD) and it's working perfectly in the manual (expert26) mode of Debian
Installer. The only problem is the preseeding; it'll always install
kernel-image-2.6.8-2-386 (in case 2.6 is used to boot the installer).

I will. I'm afraid d-i ignored my preseeded option and still tried to get
the most generic kernel.
