Did you boot with the default or with linux26 (the newer kernel with
better support for new machines)?

No most likely you were having hardware problems already. Software
doesn't fry hardware, except the a few odd cases where bad hardware
design can let software do undesireable things, but that is very rare.
Maybe the IDE cable is loose or defective. Pretty common really.
