Comments/Problems: <My network is all manual, no DHCP. After inputting manual values, got msg that the process failed. Tried using several different images,media and machines, all unsuccessful. Appeared that the installer saw the NIC's (Realtek 8139 on machine 1, an Intel Pro 1000 on machine 2) but could not set up the IP address, netmask, gateway and name server.>

<Used a Stable Sarge boot disk instead and it worked like a charm.>

This is a known issue (after the recent switch to the 2.6.12 kernel) that 
we're trying to track down.
As the issue is known, I'm closing your report.

You can check [1] to see if the problem has been solved.
