Comments/Problems:

* Initial install worked perfect
  (except the incorrect 800x600 graphical resolution)

* after the reboot and tasksel, gdm turned on OK,
  and mouse _did_ work (the first time) !

* turned off system (all seemed OK)

* turned on system ia few days later (8 May)
  ==> X failed to start
  ==> cause was clearly that no mouse available on
      /dev/psaux
      /dev/input/mice
      [I give dmesg below]
      [I only tried the built-in mouse in the keyboard of laptop,
       I did not try an external mouse]

  ==> also installed 2.6.8-686 kernel (with apt-get today 8 May
      2005 around 1900 UTC), same problem

  ==> I reverted to the old hard disk with an old 2.4.xx kernel
      and mouse worked

  ==> I reverted back to the new disk with the fresh 2.6 install
      and mouse still failed to work

  ==> I installed (with apt-get install kernel-image-2.4-686),
      back on the new disk, booted into that and mouse worked

  ==> I adapted /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 in this sense
      ImPS/2 --> PS/2 to make the mouse operate correctly

  ==> I adapted /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 to increase the largest
      resolution to "1024x768" from the original "800x600"
      (I believe the LCD of my laptop is natively 1024x768)

  ==> I booted back into 2.6.8-686 and still no mouse operation
      (/dev/psaux and /dev/input/mice do not exist ...)

  ==> SOLUTION: some googling brought me to this page:

      http://debianplanet.org/node.php?id=1094 with the issue:

      "As many other have pointet out, it is often not that simple. I had
      went from debian-2.4.something - kernel.org 2.6-test1, then I
      followed the kernel.org until last weekend when I installed a
      2.6.5-kernel from debian. When I booted the new .deb kernel,
      X-never came up..... It turned out that I had to manually
      modprobe the psmouse module... So to claim that the 2.6 - kernel
      is just an apt-get away, is a slight oversimplification..."

      So, I executed

      #modprobe psmouse

      and now it works :-)

  ==> today (14 May) I rebooted into this new disk and with

      #modprobe psmouse

      the mouse (/dev/input/mice) worked again.

  ==> I don't know how this should work "officially" ? Maybe there is
      some discover protocol that does not work on my laptop ? I am
      prepared to try out alternatives. For now, I will patch it with
      adding psmouse to my /etc/modules, but I want to contribute to
      finding the "right" solution to this problem.

HTH, Peter

Congratulations, you have just found [1] ;-)

Just add psmouse to /etc/modules and your problems will be over.

Closing the report as this was the only issue from the installation.
Thank you for your report.
