I am trying to use the last Debian GNU/Linux 3.0 r4 and I'm a bit surprised
that the default kernel is still a 2.2
Debian GNU/Linux 3.0r4 is the new revision of the STABLE (woody) release,
which by now is a few years old. It is not too surprising that it fails to
detect modern hardware. Please have a look at
http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer
to obtain the installation media for sarge (aka testing), the distribution
which will become the new stable release Real Soon Now (tm).
