Installing 2.6 with Promise's S150 SX4-M SATA card

I'm trying to install sarge (release candidate 2 with 2.6 kernel) on a
PC using Promise's S150 SX4-M SATA RAID controller and three 300G
Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 SATA HDDs. There are no other operating systems
on the system. I can configure the software in the initial installation
phase but when the computer tries to reboot onto the HDD(s) themselves,
the computer pauses indefinately with the following messages with either
LILO or GRUB:

* L 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 (several lines worth of 99's)

* GRUB loading 1.5, please wait.

I'm installing GNU/Linux on the first drive (/dev/sda) of the three
drives as I intend to use software raid 5 eventually. I've even
initialised the MBR (using 'dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda bs=512
count=1'). If I install Redhat 9.0 with Promise's Redhat driver or
Windows XP, the computer boots up fine.

I would appreciate some comments and assistance.
