Difficulty upgrading kernel on LVM/software RAID-1 system

I recently installed Sarge using D-I in a lvm-on-raid setup, and everything worked perfectly.  The 2.4-based kernel works fine.  Out of pure geekish compulsion, I decided to "upgrade" to 2.6.9.  I compiled a new kernel (using make-kpkg) with all of the lvm and raid options built in and installed it with dpkg, but I get a kernel panic saying something like "linux-device-mapper failed to mount root fs".  I am able to install the stock 2.6.9-2-k7 kernel with apt and it boots fine (although I haven't yet got the nvidia driver to work with it - separate issue).  I have even copied the .config file from the stock 2.6.9 kernel and built my own, but it still won't boot, so I don't think it is a kernel configuration problem.

I am fairly confident from reading today that what I need to do is to make or copy a initrd.img file and set up initrd for my new kernel - new territory for me that I may explore when I get home tonight. Any pertinent suggestions would be appreciated.

My question is whether this can or should be automated, perhaps by make-kpkg + dpkg -i.  The "Debian Way" of kernel updates now seems to update grub's menu.lst correctly - perhaps it could be made to detect whether any initrd changes need to be made and handle them accordingly. This message is sent in the interest of improving Debian.

I am assuming that initrd is really the issue and that I am not on a wild goose chase, which is certainly possible.

Thanks,
David Bruce
