What was the actual error message from grub?

No, it really does not 'expect the boot partition to always be at 
(hd0,0)'. It will take into account the mountpoints you selected for / 
and /boot (if that's on a separate partition as in your case).

My guess is something else is happening here. Maybe it is related to 
having / on LVM/RAID and /boot on RAID. This is not supported perfectly 
yet.

On which partition did you ask GRUB to be installed? MBR or other?

Could you please check if the installation logs (/var/log/debian-installer 
on the installed system) provide any helpfull information?
