Base System Installation Checklist:

Initial boot worked: [O]
Configure network HW: [E]
-- After selecting the appropriate module to load for my pcmcia
network card, an error came up saying that an ethernet driver had
not been loaded. However, it _did_ load the driver and it was
working just fine, so seeing the error screen was a bit
    unexpected.
Config network: [O]
Detect CD: [O]
Load installer modules: [O]
Detect hard drives: [O]
Partition hard drives: [O]
Create file systems: [O]
Mount partitions: [O]
Install base system: [O]
Install boot loader: [O]
Reboot: [O]
[O] = OK, [E] = Error (please elaborate below), [ ] = didn't try it

Comments/Problems:

The pcmcia network card failed to load after rebooting (despite it
being loaded and configured properly during the first install stage).
I had to load the appropriate modules manually (yenta_socket, ds and
pcnet_cs), then restart pcmcia services (/etc/init.d/pcmcia restart),
then reload the network (ifdown eth0; ifup eth0) before the network
was active, and I could continue the install.
To even do this, I had to get far enough into the continued install to
set a root password, then change VT to bring the network up, then prod
the installer to recognise that the network was now up (can't remember
how I did that).
After this, the install was fine. Rebooting with the system fully
installed still didn't bring the network up on boot, but it only needed
an 'ifdown eth0; ifup eth0' to get it running, since pcmcia is loaded
after the network at boot and it wasn't yet configured to run dhcpc when
it detects a network card.

Install logs and other status info is available in /var/log/debian-installer/.
