This is a summary of what others posted to the list, plus
vaguely informed guesses (marked with big ???).

  -- SRM-based if "test -f /proc/srm_environment/named_variables/booted_dev"
alpha (AlphaBIOS-based): msdos

arm: ??? bsd or msdos, maybe ???
-- arm isn't releasing with sarge at this rate anyway

hppa: msdos

i386: msdos

ia64: gpt

m68k (amiga): amiga
m68k (atari): atari
-- atari is not yet supported by libparted but should be easy
m68k (bvme6000): msdos
m68k (mac): mac
m68k (mvme147): msdos
m68k (mvme16x): msdos

mips: ??? dvh ???
  -- that's SGI's format
mipsel: msdos

powerpc (apus): ??? amiga ???
-- this is after all an m68k amiga with an add-on board
powerpc (chrp): ???
  -- no clue
powerpc (prep): ??? msdos ???
-- comments about 'primary partitions' sound suspicously msdos like
powerpc (newworld): ??? mac ???
  -- well, they are macs
powerpc (oldworld): ??? mac ???
  -- well, they are macs

s390: ???
-- appears to be totally unique (EBCDIC partition names, whee!)
& presumably not supported by libparted

sparc: sun

amd64: ??? msdos ???

sh: ???
  -- no clue
