Package: debian-installer
Version: N/A; reported 2004-01-31
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system

I tried yesterday's latest (thx joeyh) debian-installer images. After
circumventing a few (more or less) known bugs, I finally was very
upset to see that... the installation was finished! debian-installer
wiped out my Master Boot Record _without even noticing me_!

I find this totally unacceptable. Is this Windows or what?

I can understand that this is a beta version, that designing the
"right" user interface is full of complex trade-offs, blablabla, but
come on, ANY other user interface before destroying the MBR is better
than none.

Generally speaking, I find the new design of the installer very nice:
I like the idea of being able to go back and forth between "clever"
and "manual" modes. But please, just ask confirmation (just provide
a "back" button) before doing anything "clever", at the very least in
the MBR case.

   * Joey Hess
     - Add support for backing up to the main menu.
     - Reword the bootdev question to use less jargon, and to emphasize that
it overwrites the MBR by default.
     - Ask the bootdev question at high priority, as lilo does with its
question. This along with the wording clarification should prevent
accidental unavoidable MBR destruction. Closes: #230502
     - Remove dead defaultbootdev code.
