Bug#288055: installer failure/lock-up on kernel packages

Package: installation-reports
Debian-installer-version: netinst RC2 and 123004 snapshot
uname -a: Linux i386 2.6.8-1
Date: 12/30/04
Method: netinst CD image, internet connection handled by another machine
on network
Machine: Self-built PC (Tyan TI5VG+ motherboard)
Processor: AMD K6/2 550Mhz
Memory: 384MB
Root Device: IDE RAID1 60GB
Root Size/partition table:

IDE 60GB RAID1	Size (GB)	Device
/ 1 /dev/md0
/usr 8 /dev/md1
/home 6 /dev/md2
/data 45 /dev/md3
		60GB total

Swap 1 /dev/hda1
/var/cache	4 /dev/hda5
/misc 45 /dev/hda6
/zbackup	30 /dev/hda2
		80GB total

Output of lspci and lspci -n:	Command not found on netinst CD

Base System Installation Checklist:
[O] = OK, [E] = Error (please elaborate below), [ ] = didn't try it

Initial boot worked: [O]
Configure network HW: [O]
Config network: [O]
Detect CD: [O]
Load installer modules: [O]
Detect hard drives: [O]
Partition hard drives: [O]	also, created MD devices okay
Create file systems: [O]
Mount partitions: [O]
Install base system: [E]
Install boot loader: [ ]
Reboot: [ ]

Upon reaching 82% of installing base system, on the kernel section (either
2.6 or 2.4), it hangs. I left it for hours and eventually all file
descriptors were used up. It seems it could not make the initrd image for
the kernel. Processes were spwaned over and over again (judging by 'ps'
on the 2nd console). This happened using all the modes of installation
(expert26 etc.). Happens with both RC2 and latest snapshot. Is it not
possible to install to RAID?
