I set this bug as important because this is far from being the first
time we see some report about GRUB installation failing when trying to
install it on the root partition and not on the MBR.

I'm not sure that this issue really got big attention while it may be
perceived by esperienced users as a severe limitation.

Paolo bringed very useful information in his bug report about the
exact sequence of events and I think this deserves some careful
attention.

I'll try to reproduce this issue in VmWare on a test case machine
where I'll first install a minimal Debian with lilo on the MBR and try
installing another Debian with GRUB on the root partition.
