So that makes hardware the constant factor and as it supports one operating system[1] it should be able to support another o.s. You are using "woody" images. I have tried Woody bootloader about 18 months ago (yes, one and a half year in the past). The sucessor of Woody is Sarge and has a new bootloader, it is named "debian-installer", "d-i" for short. d-i has several boot option, including for monitor control. The flashes you see on your monitor are monitor control issues.
