Package: debian-installer
Severity: normal

Doing an installation using a daily netboot image from last week, using
a kernel2.6 with /boot on raid1 and / et al on lvm2 on another raid1, I
hit a problem with "Installing the Base System".

It would get to 85% (Creating Device Nodes) and then fail. As far as i
could glean from the logs, the install was failing trying to unmount
/target/proc, as /target/sbin/mdadm was running. This occured even with
debconf priority set to low; "Installing the Base System" never showed
me mdadm's debconf question about starting the md monitor daemon,
although it did install mdadm for me. ^_^

I got around this by running debootstrap et. al. by hand, following the
directions (loosely) in Appendix C.3. I had to muck around with
/target/etc/mtab as it only showed the root partition mounted, not any
of the other partitions mounted under /target. The fstab partman created
was fine though. ^_^

Also, once I'd done debootstrap, debian-installer refused to let me skip
"Installing the Base System" so I also had to do the bootloader by hand.

And I also didn't get the installation report template file. >_<

Apart from this, and having to pvcreate and vgcreate by hand during
partman, the installation seems to have worked well. (I didn't test
if manual vgcreate was neccessary or not though.)

Also, due to the 2.6.8 transition, I had to select unstable for my
mirror, get through to right before "Installing the Base System" and
then go back and reselect testing as my distribution. That worked fine.
It was suggested on IRC to pass mirror/suite=3Dunstable as a boot
parameter, but that overrides debian-install repeatedly, not just
preseeds, so with that parameter it wanted to install unstable, not
testing.

As such, this report might reference changes in unstable d-i that
isn't in testing d-i. The mdadm problem showed up trying to install
both unstable and testing, which doesn't surprise me since they're
the same version.

The patch in 264451 does indeed fix the problem I was having.
