Exact same behaviour with both images found at
http://cdimage.debian.org/pub/cdimage-testing/sid_d-i/i386/20041018/
md5's of my downloaded images match those provided at that location. If
that is not the location you had in mind, please provide a URL. FWIW, the
version of autopartkit in /cdrom/pool/main/a/autopartkit inside that
install image is 1.05 and partman-auto is v36 -- those appear to be the
latest available. (Not sure which of those two actually handles this
specific part of the partitioning)
If you believe that it should function correctly with the images above can
you provide a working preseed file?
