It is whatever the installer uses to load modules at the "finding disks"
and "partitioning disks" stage.

It keeps saying I have no disks and that there are no modules for my
disk type.  I'm not sure if it is related but it is impossible for me
to boot using a 2.6 kernel either (eg use d-i with a 2.4 kernel and
upgrade).

It might be that it is a kernel problem.
