Bug#276901: d-i on Thinkpad R40e unresponsive/hangs

Package: install
Version: various

Architecture: IBM ThibkPad R40e

Debian-installer on this IBM Thinkpad seems to require USB disabling in order to work with
the 2.4 kernel. If this is the case then this should be mentioned in the release notes.
HOWEVER the most recent installer, test 2-pre, hangs when booting even with USB
disabled but an earlier version works ok. I tried other arguments (floppy=thinkpad, disabling
APIC, LAPIC) with no differing results

Here are the different installers and options I've tried and their results:

installer version: don't know. a complete ISO of disc 1 downloaded using Jigdo on 9 Aug
kernel boot option: linux
argument: none
result: displays the language chooser but won't allow any keypresses.

installer version: don't know. a complete ISO of disc 1 downloaded using Jigdo on 9 Aug
kernel boot option: linux
argument: debian-installer/probe/usb=false
result: works

kernel boot option: linux26
argument: none
result: hangs at:
ACPI: thermal Zone [THM0] (59 C)
Starting system log daemon: syslogd, klogd/

I had the problem of not allowing any key presses at the language chooser with the Woody
installer and there are many reports of it on the web, without work arounds
