Bug#275729: installation-reports

Package: installation-reports

Debian-installer-version: from the weekly-built set of CD taken with bittorrent.
Only the 1st CD has been downloaded at http://cdimage.debian.org/pub/weekly/torrents/i386/
Last modified date : 5 oct 2004.

It is the second time that I failed to install the Debian Sarge on my desktop computer.
I have 2 hard disks. A Mandrake 9.1 is already installed on hda, and I try to install the Debian
on hdb, which previously contained only backup files.

uname -a:
on hda : Linux localhost 2.4.21-0.32mdk #1 Sat Jul 3 19:15:15 MDT 2004 i686 unknown unknown GNU/Linux
on hdb, something like : Debian GNU/Linux, kernel 2.6.8-1-686-smp

Date: 7 oct 2004 around 21H00 french time.

Method: I have used the 1st CD from the weekly-built bittorrent directory.
I booted with the 1st CD, and then followed the standard installation procedure.
Because I have a non-free ADSL card (PCI Bewan ST) requiring compiled modules
(then manual installation), I can't use the installation from network.

Detect hard drives: [O]
Partition hard drives: [E] (can't work for automatic partitioning for desktop)
Create file systems: [O] (ok if manual with ext2 FS, can't find ext3 for manual partitioning)
Mount partitions: [O] (I suppose...)
Install base system: [E] (can't detect the 1st CD for packages installation)
Install boot loader: [O]
Reboot: [O]

Comments/Problems:

(Just for information, the 1st installation was with the weekly-built CD from 27 sept 2004.
The only pb was the selection of the sources of packages : can't read/detect the CDROM).

For this 2nd actual installation, the CDROM is again not read, also I can't install the
basics packages (make) to set up the ADSL modules. But before this, the automatic partitioning
for desktop did not work. The partition proposal seems right, but was impossible to complete,
expect if it was done manually using ext2 filesystem.

Please do not hesitate to ask me more information if needed, and to tell me if something seems
wrong in my method.
I can do a new attempt if you believe the pb is identified.

Thanks a lot and good luck.
Guillaume Audirac
