rootskel requires a certain version of glibc.

That verison of glibc is not available on sparc because it does not
build.

The build failure of glibc is (apparently) due to a bug in binutils.
At one point, it appeared that the binutils bug may have been fixed
but that does not seem to be the case.

In other words, rootskel cannot be built until binutils is fixed.

I'm willing to do builds and uploads (which James Troup may reject)
but not of packages that cannot be built by standard Debian tools.

Either rootskel needs to be fixed not to depend on an unavailable
version of glibc, or binutils needs to be fixed.

With Microsoft, failure is not an option. It is a standard feature.
