Sarge hangs after module params

My machine is hanging while installing sarge. The install locks up while doing "Detect and mount CD-ROM" just after asking for module parameters and then mentioning that a few modules are not yet available, which presumably wouldn't be an issue.
The modules that it complains about not being available are:
*agpgart (Intel 440BX/ZX/DX - 82443BX/ZX/DX Host bridge)
*ide-mod
*ide-probe-mod
*ide-generic
*ide-floppy
This occurs using a beta 3 or pre rc2 netinst cd with either a 2.4 or a 2.6 kernel.

I have tried disabling things such as autodetection of usb and I stripped the machine of all hardware but for the things needed for the install. I've also been through the
bios and done things like disabling shadowing as suggested in the manual.

I'm afraid I can't think of any ways to get more information. Searching around for
similar issues has turned up nothing. Dmesg shows nothing interesting.

This is my hardware list. I've googled around for issues with it:
mainboard	p61440BX/B1S Bios V1.4SLR
CPU P2 400
RAM 128mb
HD: IDE ST38421A
CDROM lg cdrom crd 8400c
Graphics	ati 3d rage pro "ati 3d rage pro" atir3
Network 3com fast etherlink xl 10/100mb tx ethernet nic (3c905B-tx)

I also picked out the following random drivers from a windows 98 install:
*82371AB/EB PCI bus master ide controller
*82371eb power management controller
*82443BX processor to agp
*82443BX processor to pci
*82371ab/eb pci to usb universal host controller

Could anybody help please? If I could simply isolate a particular item of hardware
then I guess I could replace it.
Thanks,

Ian
