Comments/Problems:
First of all, I had a working debian sarge/sid system on this machine
so I thought I'd use an image/kernel/ramdisk on the harddrive. I
needed a few tries to get GRUB to boot into the install kernel. The
install started OK but I wanted to keep the partitions from the old
install. When I put in "format /boot and /", the formatting of /
failed. I see now why this happened, the CD iso was on / (it was on
/home too, but I guess the one on / was found first). Needless to say,
I got a completely unresponsive system from this. I used a different
machine to burn a CD and installed from that.
I was worried when the partitioning program wanted to write into the
partition table although I had made no changes. I think it would be
good to skip writing if there are no changes. /home survived, though.
The FAT32 partition contains a win2k system, it would be good if
that was detected.
The "Red background" problem occured for me. Strange thing is that the
first CD i made was cut short (the burner is on a Win machine, don't
ask), and while the install didn't finish, it started OK and went
through until module loading for ethernet. That disk gave a _blue_
background. Go figure.
The e100 ethernet was autodetected, but it seems my wireless pcmcia
card is not. It's a 3com 3crwe62092b which needs the atmel-firmware
package. When I hand-installed that (and ifplugd and waproamd) it
is detected and shows up in ifconfig alright. I have yet to actually
try it, but there _should_ be no problem.
