At the point of installing the base system, the installer fails due to a 
missing library. /var/log/messages shows:

/usr/lib/debootstrap/pkgdetails: error while loading shared libraries: libgcc_s.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

That was it. The library was missing from Martin's netboot image.
