This option appeared to do what it's supposed to, but did not affect
the sidewise shifting of the text-mode display. It caused the appearance of
the ASCII and ncurses displays to changes slightly, but did this during the
first part of the install, before the reboot. After reboot, the display
shifted one character to the left as before, so that column 1 was
off-screen. This time, however, it also shifted left after the second
reboot, when installation was completed.
As near as I was able to observe, the jump to the left happened when
the screen went black for a couple of seconds and then came back. This
happened after "Calculating module dependencies" and after the modules and
the network came up, but before "Base system configuration". At just about
that time, a line something like "hub.c syslog output" went flying past.
