Comments/Problems:
I eventually got this install to work, but it was a beast. I will probably
leave out some details.
I first tried the current daily built CD, which could not see the USB
keyboard. Same is true of RC1. Understanding this had just been fixed in
svn, I got a very recent daily build from dannf and used it instead. This
d-i build used the 2.6.7 kernel. I set up netbooting with no trouble.
At first I was using a recent daily-ish build of the d-i 2.4 netboot
images, from dannf, and using this build, d-i did not load any kernel
module udebs from the mirror, which made it impossible to finish the
install as there was no vfat support. I switched to an even newer 2.6.7
based initrd, and did not re-experience this problem, which I have not
investigated further. At a guess, it is some kind of kernel mismatch.
I had to install sid because partman-efi is not available in testing.
In partman, I had a few problems at first getting the efi partition to
work, but eventually sorted it out. Several bugs have been filed about
these problems (#268495, #268554, #268555), so I won't go into detail
here.
When installing the base system, I ran into the problem that debootstrap
in sid is broken for ia64, there's a dependency on pciutils. I modified the
debootstrap sid script to work around this. I understand a fix is already
in progress.
Installing elilo was somewhat of a disaster. First, elilo could not mount the
efi boot partition created by partman, due to bug #268561. I modified elilo to
work around this bug, and elilo seemed to install ok.
But actually, the efivars kernel module was not installed, which prevented
it from modifying the efi. I understand dannf will be adding a new udeb for
this module; I ended up wgetting it from my server and manually loading it,
then chrooting into the target system (on a new d-i run), and running
elilo by hand, using a command line dannf gave me.
Booting the new system was also an adventure. I (eventually) got a boot
item in the efi menu, but it didn't work, the kernel was not mounting the
root filesystem. Eventually I noticed that efi.conf had /dev/sda3, whereas
root was on /dev/sda2. I don't know how elilo made this mistake, and I have
not yet investigated. I suspect it might just be because I did run elilo by
hand. After I edited and fixed it, the system booted ok.
base-config was uneventful, but I did notice that the desktop task was
uninstallable:

tasksel: aptitude failed
Apparently things are not as consistent for ia64 in testing as they could be,
aptitude is not very robust when installing tasks if all the dependencies
cannot be met. I suspect this would not be a problem if I had installed
testing.
