Comments/Problems:

I got stuck at the partitioning. This laptop has an old redhat system
running on it, and the
somewhat small 20 GB harddisk was previously partitioned in a complex
partitioning scheme, including four primary partitions:
* a NTFS/win2k partition
* an ext2 partition
* an extended partition
* a "thinkpad hibernation" partition
The extended partition contains:
* a large FAT partition for data common to win2k and linux
* a swap partition

Now, I wanted to format the ext2 partition and install debian onto it. I
couldn't get so far, though. This is what I got:

1) A dialog entitled "[!!] Partition disk" appears, asking me to config
RAID, LVM, do a "guided partitioning" or get help
on partitioning. I select "guided partitioning". I get a new dialog,
giving me two choices: "Erase entire disk" or "Manually edit partition
table".
I select "Manually edit". Now, suddenly, I am thrown back at the
original "Partition disk" dialog with the RAID and LVM stuff.

This is highly confusing. Especially in a critical part of the
installation as partitioning, the one and only part of the
installation where you can do MAJOR harm to existing data if you do any
mistakes. (Most other installation mistakes can be
corrected by reinstalling, but not accidential overwriting of
partitions). I think there are some usability issues with
this dialog.

Anyhow, after a while I figure out that the choices doesn't end on "Help
on partitioning", but that I can continue down and
select what I thought was an informational message, that says:
IDE1 master (hda) - 20.0 GB TOSHIBA MK2016GAP
       #1  20.0 GB    fat16

By selecting the last, I get to a dialog saying I'm editing partition
#1, that is a 20GB partition formatted using FAT16.
Now, at last, I realize what the text on the original partition dialog
means -- the installer believes my hard disk
has only one 20 GB fat 16 partition, and presents it for me to select it
for installation.

However, THIS IS WILDLY INCORRECT!

I press Alt-F2 and gets myself a prompt, starting up fdisk. After
figuring out the disk isn't called /dev/hda (in spite of
the message in the dialog) but /dev/discs/disc0/disc, I check the
partition table. It sure looks all right, all my
partitions in place.

So, there is some serious issue with the debian installer partitioner. A
clueless user could easily have ruined
his/her system by believing the installer.

I'll try to get a dump of the partition table and send to you, as soon
as I get a running system on the computer.

For reference, I found an old CD-ROM marked "debian sarge 2003-10-05"
with an older version of the new installer.
I tried it out, and it started cfdisk, which could figure out the
correct partitions. So, this is in a way a regression.

If you need to know anything more about the system, just let me know and
I'll be glad to help.

Sorry for coming with this kind of stuff so late in the testing process.
:-) You guys are going an awesome job.

Here is the binary dump of my partition table from fdisk:
