We currently accept uppercase/lowercase hostnames. That code has not
changed in a _long_ time.

Well then, how about this:

Template: netcfg/invalid_hostname
Type: error
_Description: Invalid hostname
 The name "${hostname}" is invalid.
 .
A valid hostname may contain only the numbers 0-9, the letters a-z and A-Z,
and the minus sign. It must be between 2 and 63 characters long, and may not
begin or end with a minus sign.

I admit there is some room for true idiots to say "hmm, you can only use
the characters 0, 9, a, z, A, and Z in the hostname!!!1 debian
sucks!!!1", but are there any better ideas for wording this template?

It has been fixed the above way in Subversion right now.
