Comments/Problems:

The first problem was that the netinst CD didn't boot. The system reset
itself if the CD was in the drive while booting, even if it should be
trying to boot from a floppy (boot order A:,CDROM,C:).

I figured that was because of the old BIOS (one of these old AMI BIOS
with a graphical windows-like interface, with a BIOS date from 95).
Booting from the floppies worked fine.

I got bit trying to use reiserfs for everything, because the partitioner
doesn't notice journalling filesystems have a minimum size because of
the hidden journal (and IIRC it's 30M default for reiserfs and 8M
default for ext3). It failed while creating the /boot filesystem. I
decided to use ext3 for /boot (and later changed / to ext3 when I
noticed it had bad blocks; checking for bad blocks in reiserfs is a
pain).

Another problem was that the partitioner didn't have the option to check
for bad blocks like the old installer had. This caused an error while
unpacking the base system, due to an IO error. It was not possible to
umount the partitions and check for badblocks by hand because badblocks
was not available.

As a workaround, I used the old installer from
dists/stable/main/disks-i386/current/images-1.44/bf2.4 to do the mkfs in
the two ext3 partitions and the mkswap in the swap partition, checking
for badblocks in all of them. That was the only thing I did in the old
installer (I also told it the right mountpoints so it created the /boot
mountpoint).

When trying again in the new installer, I told it to not mkfs/mkswap,
and everything worked fine.

The system date somehow got set horribly wrong; I don't know if it was
user error or BIOS error. It would be nice if the installer had a SNTP
client to check for the sanity of the clock, or at least scream if
somehow it's set to 1996 or something equally bogus.

The broken PCI video card (which caused ICEs on gcc until it was
removed) didn't cause any problems during the install (except that after
finishing the second part of the install I rebooted and the box stopped
working until the card was reseated).

I chose grub as the bootloader (why there isn't a question about
bootloaders in this report template?)
