Method:
I downloaded the 110Mb CD Image, with Debian base from the debian-installer
page, and booted from that.
The installation was then continued over the network, after an upgrade
to `unstable` once the base was setup to my satisfaction.

Comments/Problems:
This machine is a Dell Inspiron 8100 and the initial expectation was
that I could boot from the CD-ROM and start the installation without
anything special.
As an experiment I tried booting with "kernel26", and the install
hung after activating the "pcmcia scan" stage of startup.
Similarly the default kernel hung also.
I had to boot with "hw-detect/pcmcia-start=no" to get past the
startup and into the instller properly. I initially tried to add
"aix7xxx=no_probe" as that was the only option listed next to the
name "Dell", but that made no difference.
I was impressed with the new partiioner - although I did it
manually as I wanted to just split the disk into / and /home,
and I wasn't sure what it would do if I didn't control it myself.
Once that was done though everything worked OK. I installed and
had a fun time compiling the NVidia driver to get X working.
Sound and the DVD/CD-RW drive worked out of the box. My onboard
NIC was correctly detected and setup to with DHCP without any
fuss.
All in all a good experience, but it would have saved me a few
reboots if the pcmcia-start item had included "Inspiron" or "Dell"
next to it...
