I guess that the first hard disk had a partition table with type "sun"
(it doesn't support primary and logical partitions) and the second had a
"msdos" partition table.

On a partition tables without primary and logical partitions partman
doesn't show primary/logical column in order to save space on the row
for other things (for example for partition names).  This is not a big
problem for hard disks as it is not usual to use on one system different
types of partition tables.  It is a problem for the LVM and RAID
"partitions" but the support of LVM and RAID in partman needs
reimplementation anyway.
