Wait ... hmmm my Sarge (upgraded and fresh install) systems have kernels in /boot while symlink at / . Of course, unless you partition disk and mount one of it as /boot with ext3, you do not have /boot and / in separate partition. This is all possible in partition dialogue as I understand.
