Package: installation
Version: sarge

I tried to install sarge from the hard-disk using a netboot install:

1. I've downloaded vmlinuz, initrd.gz and mini.iso from
ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/dists/sarge/main/installer-i386/20040430/images/netboot/

2. I've placed this files in c:\ (/dev/hda1)

3. I've started the installation proces by booting to DOS only (using a
rescue disc):
c:\> loadlin vmlinuz root=/dev/ram initrd=initrd.gz
(using loadlin version 1.6)

The kernel booted and the installation proces was started. Following steps
worked without problems:
1. Choose language -> en_US
2. Select keyboard layout -> American English
3. Detecting hardware goes by without errors (that I could see)
4. DHCP detection goes by without errors (that I could see)
5. Configure network -> Hostname = debian
6. Mirror -> United States -> ftp.us.debian.org
7. no proxy
8. Debian version to install -> testing
9. The components of the Debian Installer get downloaded

Then (after a disk-detection screen?) I can do the partitioning, but no
partitions are listed. There seems to be no way to add partitions. Selecting
'Guided partitioning' doesn't help (just gives a dialog with one option:
'Manually edit partition table').

Going with ALT-F2 to the shell, I type:
# cfdisk /dev/hda
FATAL ERROR: Cannot open disk drive
(same for /dev/hdb - I have 2 disks)

/proc/ide/ does not exist.

I've installed Debian on this machine before without problems (woody). The
layout of partitions on the two disks was then:
/dev/hda1 vfat
/dev/hdb1 vfat
/dev/hdb2 swap
/dev/hdb3 reiserfs
These partitions are still present on the system.

I can provide any other info if needed (but you'll have to wait until I
installed 'woody' on it again).

Kr,
Robrecht

The files here use an older kernel version than what's on the mirrors.
Please use the files from this url instead, which should fix your
problem:
