The name rules look to be the largely the same for VGs and LVs:

Allowable characters are: alphanumerics and . _ - +
The name must not start with a hyphen and LV names must not start "snapshot".

Tha maximum name length is 128 characters.

This is for LVM2, I think it's similar for LVM1 but I'll check if you need to
know specifically.
