Bug#255042:

Package: installation-reports

Debian-installer-version: Test Candidate 1
uname -a: Linux hackjob 2.4.26-1-386
Date: 6/14/2004
Method: CD-ROM network install Image

Machine: HP d350 SFF
Processor: p4 2.66
Memory: 1.5GB
Root Device: ide
Root Size/partition table:
sdr@hackjob:~$ sudo fdisk /dev/hda

The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 19457.
There is nothing wrong with that, but this is larger than 1024,
and could in certain setups cause problems with:
1) software that runs at boot time (e.g., old versions of LILO)
2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs
   (e.g., DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK)

Command (m for help): p

Install boot loader: [ ]
Reboot: [ ]
[O] = OK, [E] = Error (please elaborate below), [ ] = didn't try it

Comments/Problems:
The tg3 NIC was not recognized by kernel 2.6, but was detected and configured by
kernel 2.4.
Installing the base system failed at between 80 and 90 % under both 2.4 and 2.6.
It was impossible to continue past the error. I dropped back to the beta 4
installer image and was able to install. Under beta 4 I still had to install
under 2.4 so that the NIC was operational, but was able to upgrade to 2.6 after
the installation as complete.
