Sarge powerpc 20040526 snapshot installation report
Yesterday I tested debian-installer on my iBook, and I sucessfully installed a
working system including X and GNOME. Kudos to the installer team!
There are a few glitches during the installation though:
1. There is something wrong with the detection of the screen. The screen is
black after boot by ``install'', and I had to use my lightness key (see item 3
below) to adjust the screen. Using ``install-safe'' works, though.
2. During first stage installation, if I switch to other virtual terminal
(Alt-F2 etc.) and switch back, the background of the screen would turn red and
stay that way.
3. The iBook uses function keys as some special keys (F1 and F2 as adjusting
lightness of screen, for example) in OS X, and you need to press Fn-F1 to get
the real F1 key. When I boot from the installer CD, I got a black screen (I
think I need install-safe or the video=ofonly boot option), but press F1
(without Fn modifier) did turn on the screen and increase the lightness (however
in OS X it's supposed to decrease lightness). Meanwhile I got message
keyboard: unknown scancode e0 4c
on the terminal. This problem also exists after the installation.
4. On the front edge of the iBook, there is a white LED. It is used to indicate
sleep in OS X. In Debian (both installer and the installed system), the LED
behaves exactly like a harddrive LED, and flashes quite frequently. The LED is
quite bright and is close to the eyes, so such flashes are quite annoying.
