I was connected to the internet through the airwire card, the installer didn't write an /etc/network/interfaces block for eth1.
After the installer was finished and rebooted the machine, it didn't boot to a linux boot loader- it booted directly to OSX. I was able to boot linux by holding down the "option" key during the boot and selecting the linux partition from the menu, and finished installing the boot loader by running "ybin".
ALSO, the kernel installed on the machine doesn't work with external firewire drives. I can see some reference to "logging into sbp2 device {guid}" as the machine boots, but it doesn't show up as a SCSI or IDE device, and the sbp2 module isn't there to manually load.
