Bug#250047: many strange problems loading 2.6 kernel modules on i386

Package: busybox-cvs
Version: 200405076-2
Tags: d-i
Severity: normal

This version of busybox is still incapable of reliably loading kernel
modules with the 2.6(.5) kernel.

Some of the error messages I have seen include this from insmod vga16fb:
insmod: 2.6.ko: no module by that name found

As far as I can tell the module and all its dependent modules are loaded by
modprobe, as they are listed in /proc/modules after, but modprobe still
fails with that message.

I've also seen this one as d-i boots:
insmod: cannot insert '/lib/modules/2.6.5-1-386/kernel/drivers/video/vga16fb.ko: Unknown symbol in module (-1): No such file or directory
It also does this for uhci-usb and usbkbd.

There are many many Unnown symbols in dmesg
uhci-usb: usb_hcd_pci_suspend, etc
and yet /proc/modules lists the module as loaded
