Hmmm. I looks like it is the 'basic-desktop' task. This installs the
x-window-system package which depends on xdm.
So this would happen to users who select _both_ the 'basic-desktop' task
(which pulls in xdm) and the 'desktop' task (which pulls in gdm). The
'desktop' task by itself installs x-window-system-core which does _not_
depend on xdm.
I guess 'basic-desktop' is meant for people who want X, but don't want KDE and
GNOME.
But it isn't clear from the descriptions that if you select 'desktop' you
don't need to select 'basic-desktop' as well. In fact, it seems like you are
supposed _not_ to.
Well, personally I've never liked tasksel anyway...
