Comments/Problems:

This is my 2nd try of Debians beta4, the last time everything worked out
just fine. Now I'm having problems getting partman to work for my
laptop, so I'd be really glad for some hints. I didn't try any of the
daily builds yet.

My problems should be rather easy to fix, I suppose, so I'm glad for any
hints/pointers.

1. What went wrong:

I used "expert vga=771" to boot. And, besides the usb-floppy, all
modules to access and set up my hardware were available.

This is what mount said:

-- snip --
tmpfs on / type tmpfs (rw)
proc on /proc type proc (rw)
devfs on /dev type devfs (rw)
devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw)
/dev/cdroms/cdrom0 on /cdrom type iso9660 (ro)
-- snap --

I couldn't get partman to work, so I used console and

# cfdisk /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/disc

to partition the harddrive. Simply typing "cfdisk" would produce this:

-- snip --
FATAL ERROR: Cannot open disk drive
Press any key to exit cfdisk
-- snap --

But by using cfdisk & the lvm-tools everything was set up as needed.
Only partman fails to read the (old or new) existing partition table or
to continue. When starting "Partition disks" from the main-menu, he
finds all volume groups, as well as the harddrive:

That means in /var/lib/partman/devices/ are all devices partman found
(hitachi is the name of the volume group I used):

-- snip --
=dev=hitachi=export
=dev=hitachi=home
=dev=hitachi=usr
=dev=hitachi=var
=dev=ide=host0=bus0=target0=lun0=disc
-- snap --

2. What I would like to do:

Since I have set up everything I simply need to make the directories in
/target properly, mount them (at least "/"?), put a correct fstab in
/target/etc/fstab and continue with "Install the base system". I tried a
little and read some shell-scripts, but didn't get thus far.

Can somebody please point me the right direction?

I wanted to checkout d-i through svn to dig a little deeper, but:

-- snip --
aselitz[~/d-i]> date
Mon May 17 02:26:58 CEST 2004
baselitz[~/d-i]> svn co svn://svn.debian.org/d-i/trunk debian-installer
svn: Berkeley DB error while opening environment for filesystem /svn/d-i/db:
Permission denied
-- snap --

So I had to unpack some .debs from the cd-rom to look into this. But
this became a real PITA after a while.

3. Addendum: some impressions on d-i:

Keep up the great work! Besides some problems with partman it makes a
great impression on me. For partman I still find the menu a little bit
confusing, but that might just be me being silly.

* Several times hardware had to be detect. A button to mark/unmark all
drivers to detect at once and maybe additionally grouping them would be
nice.

* Several times I found the "<Go Back>"-button a bit confusing: instead
of simply continuing by hitting return, I used to tab to "Go Back",
altering all changes I had made. Maybe it would be nice to provide a
button "Continue", which is marked as default?
