Because the ISO code for United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland
is GB:

Of course, if you even don't end up with British defaults (such as
Europe/London timezone, use of mirrors in UK, strange money and
measurement units, cockney accent, love soccer, don't eat frogs, lose
6 Nations tournament), this is a bug. At least definitely for the
first two items...:-)
